In July, GTA CEO Pat O’Shannassy and Grains Australia CEO Richard Simonaitis travelled to China to strengthen relationships with key industry and trade associations, and to engage with local stakeholders on Australian canola. The visit also included presentations on Australian grain at the China International Grains Conferences hosted by China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By‑Products (CFNA).
While in China, Pat met with Australian Ambassador HE Scott Dewar, DAFF Ag Counsellors, the China National Association of the Grain Sector (CNAGS), COFCO, and CFNA. He provided an update on Australian grain exports, noting strong demand for barley and sorghum, while wheat exports have slowed due to increased Chinese production and reduced demand.
GTA, together with other grain industry stakeholders, have been building relationships through a range of industry activities in China. GTA and Grains Australia have also been engaging with the Government, highlighting that a broader strategic policy framework will enhance the effectiveness of grain industry engagement with China.
During the visit, Pat presented at the China International Cereals and Oils Conference and the China Imported Grains and Feed Conference, covering Australian wheat, barley, sorghum and canola. The presentation was well received by local and international delegates.
GTA had a constructive dialogue with local canola industry stakeholders to strengthen engagement and gain further insight and understanding on the local issues for canola exports to China.
