Grain Trade Australia (GTA) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) established the Bulk Imported Grain and Meal Industry Consultative Committee (BIGMICC) to formalise engagement between DAFF and the grain industry. The committee provides a forum to discuss arrangements for importing grain and protein meal into Australia, while safeguarding the nation’s biosecurity status. Its purpose is to ensure ongoing engagement, strengthen preparedness, and support efficient processes for grain and meal imports.
Australia imports around 900,000 tonnes of protein meal annually and has historically imported significant volumes of grain during periods of severe and prolonged drought.
On 27 August, GTA participated in a DAFF Importing Grain Workshop in Canberra. The event was well attended, with more than a dozen GTA members, DAFF representatives, and stakeholders from the stockfeed, chicken and red meat sectors. The workshop provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives and build understanding of the steps and requirements involved in applying for bulk grain import permits.
DAFF encouraged industry to engage early in the import process to identify requirements and strengthen preparedness, helping to build supply chain resilience in times of drought.
Speaking at the workshop, GTA CEO Pat O’Shannassy stressed the importance of acting now rather than waiting until the next drought. He emphasised the need for efficient supply chains that manage biosecurity risks and protect the value of Australia’s grains industry, which has earned a global reputation for reliably delivering safe, high-quality food.
