Following industry consultation on the use of Fenitrothion, which included a submission from NWPGP/GTA, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines (APVMA) has reversed its decision to remove access to Fenitrothion for use in stored grain for insect control.
GTA’s Australian Grain Industry Code of Practice played an important part in the industry’s submission to APVMA. The Code outlines the processes and procedures required and undertaken to ensure good and sound quality assurance practices in the Australian grain supply chain. The Code is endorsed by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
Fenitrothion is an organophosphate insecticide, an important element of the Australian grain industry’s integrated pest management strategy. Its use on bulk-stored grain entering silos remains authorised. However, approval for structural treatments has been withdrawn.
APVMA made these decisions in the interests of worker safety, and the protection of animals, the environment and trade.
